If you have never seen a dog ‘bloating’ watch this video.  Everyone should see this and forward this link to all their dog loving friends.  Knowing what to look for will save your dogs life.

Sherri has Elvira, one of our past puppies, and Elvira bloated last year at the age of 8.  She read my past articles on bloat and sent me this email with some GREAT information.  Again, all puppies I sell well be encouraged to have their stomach’s tacked at spay / neuter.

First, spent some time on your blog yesterday. Great info on bloat. Martha Stewart pet products through Petsmart carries a great dog bowl designed to slow down eating. Has pegs built in the bowl part, dog must nose around them to pick out the food, prevents gulping. Elvira has one and it has slowed down her eating a lot. Also, don’t know if you are familiar with Evangers dog food. We sold a lot of it with the business we had. Very high quality, all life stages, feel it was superior to Canadae. chicken and brown rice, pheasant and brown rice (Elvira’s choice!) or whitefish and sweet potato (very effective for sensitive stomachs) The vet who did Elvira’s boat surgery is now recommending tacking the stomach at time of spay/neuter or ASAP. She never believed in that until she moved to the desert when she noticed a marked increase in bloats in her practice. Especially in late June and early July when we begin to experience prolonged periods of time with temperatures over 105. theory is dogs drink more volume, more often. She was doing 10-12 emergency surgeries a month! And those were the ones where the owners said yes they could afford it, many had to put the dog down. It’s the only 24 hour vet ER in the area, but that is still a lot of bloat cases. – Sherri
I know, two post in one day!!  I’m sorry I am very behind in my post.  I am going to have to double up while I can.  Another short week with the holidays.  It is unlikely I will post at all from Wednesday – Sunday!
