Life With Poodles

Mica, Libby, and Lina update

With the recent update of my website, several people have contacted me asking why some of the girls had been removed from the website.  I then realized I had not made a post about any of my girls.

Let’s start with Lina.  She is my Mini as many of you know.  After speaking with her breeder, I finally decided she should have a litter of babies.  Sadly, when I took her in for eye certification last fall, she failed miserably.  When the eye vet says ‘hmmm, let me show you something.” you know it isn’t going to be good news.   Lina has what is called Optic Nerve Hypoplasia in her right eye, and it is genetic in Mini Poodles.   Essentially, she is blind in that eye, though you wouldn’t know because it mimics the good left eye.  Unless you cover up the left eye, her right eye will contract and dialate, which is why I never noticed any issues.  Lina was spayed back in the fall and is enjoying pushing the Standard Poodles around and barking at the dogs next door.  You can see her results listed on OFA.

Next we have Libby.  I co-own Lib with Sue in Minnesota.  Libby is a LONG cycler, meaning she has only been in season once or twice her entire life.  She is 6 years old this year.  Sue was going to breed her last year, but Libby decided not to cycle at all.  Now that she is 6 years old, Sue and I are not comfortable breeding such an older girl for the first time.  Libby has been retired without having any pups.

Lastly we have Mica, who has been fostered by Heather in San Antonio.  Mica was my grand hope for new blood in my silver / blue line.  She has an outstanding body, floats when she moves.  Her health testing was moving along nicely and I had planned on her having a litter this summer, but in February Heather sent me a photo of her coat.  It was looking really bad.  Heather’s vet said it was allergies, so she wasn’t to worried but wanted me to know.  I looked at the photos and told her to have both a thyroid and sebaceous adenitis (SA) test run ASAP.   It was confirmed SA and her paperwork has been filled out and mailed to the Poodle Health Registry.  Obviously she will be spayed.  I’m just thankful I decided to wait for her to have babies.  Above are photos from early last year.  Below are some recent photos.  Pedigree Link

So there ya have it.  Three girls removed from the breeding program.  Thankfully they all have great homes.  I keep saying I need to let Lina go to a nice pet home, but my daughter gives me the stink eye.  This does put a damper on the  number of litters I had planned for this year and the direction I had hopped to go, but we all do what we must for the betterment of the breed.
