Training Video – “PLACE”

This is my first attempt at a training video, so this is a work in progress.  It is hard to train, explain, and keep the camera in view, have decent lighting, and be where the camera can hear me all at the same time.

I looked at all the video I took this weekend and I felt this was the best place to start.  This video shows Lincoln demoing the “place” concept.  “Place” is a spot where the dog goes to hang out.  It is technically an invisible crate which they can’t leave without being released or called to do something.  A place can be a dog bed, the top of a dog kennel/crate, a laundry basket, or a storage tubby like I used here.  When I first teach this, I use something off the ground.  It doesn’t need to be high, but if it has a little height it reminds a puppy to wait without me having to verbally remind.  It makes them think before they act.

Here I am working specifically on obedience commands, mostly Sit, but some Down and Stand.  HOWEVER, it is best to start them out just getting up on the item and hanging out, giving them treats and practicing getting on and off.  I did take a little video of Jazz learning “place” this weekend.  Because she did not know place, it was the ideal time to get video.  I am not showing Jazz’s video first because I wanted everyone to see where the training is heading.  The next video will show Jazz learning, and the final video this week will show Flash using some of that training IN ACTION.  You will notice with Flash I used the term “Table” because of agility training, but I have decided “place’ is a better word due to the number of obstacles in agility that start with T (Tire, Tunnel, Table, Teeter…)  You will be able to see just why teaching them to Sit or Down on a box at distance is useful for Agility, Obedience, and home.  🙂  There is a method to my madness!

OK, I kept it down to less than 6 mins.  Enjoy!  LINCOLN VIDEO DEMO:  PLACE
