Training Video: Place training SIT, DOWN, STAND at Distance on a long line.

This video is overdue.  I let it slide for a long while doing other things.  I made a list yesterday of all the video’s that need a second or even third part.  I decided to tackle this one first because if you have worked the first video I made about PLACE with your dog, you might not know where to go next in training.  This is the next level after you have your dog sit, down, and standing on “PLACE” up close, off leash.

In this video I cover starting distance work using PLACE as the reminder to not move toward me when I give these commands.  It is a natural tendency of dogs to want to down / sit right at your feet.  We do not want them thinking down, stand. or sit is a moving command.  It is what it is, do it where you are right now.  Using PLACE will keep the dog from ever learning they CAN creep forward.  When your dog is doing Sit, Down, Stand on the long leash but with no leash assist or repeated commands (as you see me doing in this video.  JAZZ is not ready to move off leash yet), then you will take off the line and check for consistency.

Step 3 you will remove the kennel / tubby / whatever you are using as place and do it on the ground, on leash a few times just in case, then off leash ASAP.  If the dog is having issues on leash on the ground, go back to using PLACE, even if it is just a towel on the ground as a visual reminder.  You should be able to Sit, Stand, and Down your dog from a distance without them moving toward you.  This is useful in competitive obedience, agility, and every day life.  There are many times when you want a dog to stop moving and freeze.  You will have 3 ways to accomplish this task.  Generally my “DOWN” command is my emergency command to stop forward movement.  If you work your dogs off leash, this training is not optional, it is REQUIRED!
