CANINE SAR

Keith and I have been involved with Canine Search and Rescue for about 2 year.  When we moved here to Alabama, we were lucky enough to find a group doing this work.  The North Alabama Search Dog Association took us under their wing, and were really patient with us "newbies".   Lucky for us, we had just got Merlot, who was just the right age to start.  It is always much easier to start a young dog, who has no habits, than an older dog.  Our group does allow people to try with an older dog (2-4 years old), but it is much easier with a dog under one year of age.

Sitting: MAX-Lab/Shepherd, MERLOT-Poodle, GABBY-Bull Terrier, SAMPSON-Shepherd
Down:JESTER-Mix, CALCULUS-Shepherd/Lab, SCULLY-Lab, RIVER-Lab
Absent: SHADOW-Shepherd, RIPLEY-Lab Mix

Merlot was started as a Wilderness Airscent dog and has recently added Cadaver training.  To do Search and Rescue, you must have a dog who is willing to work under all conditions, will stay committed to the job at hand for hours at a time, and one that is completely off leash controllable.

I'm going to try and get some photos of Merlot working and put them up on this page.  Wish me luck!!
