Foster Dog: Sasha

Sasha

We have a new foster dog here at Anutta.  Her name is Sasha and she is a wonderful sweet 6 year old cream Standard Poodle girl.  Right now she is being checked over and treated for various issues, but once she gets the all clear we will allow her to be placed up for adoption.

Yesterday I made the 3.5 hour drive down to a small town about 30 minutes south of San Antonio to pick up this lovely lady.  Her eyes were in very bad shape and once I arrived home the first thing I did was shave all the gunk and matted hair away from her eyes with my handy cordless Moser clippers.  She was also shaking her head, an indication of ear issues.  I called the vet and made an appointment to have her completely checked over today.   I introduced her to Jazz and Flash and she was welcomed warmly by both dogs.  She has great communication skills and let them know that she was not going to rough house, but she would play a bit and enjoy their company.  They attempted to get her to run with them around the yard, but she was happy to watch and just get to know us all.  I can tell you she is very stable, bomb proof in temperament.  She is exceptionally good with kids, adults of both sexes, and other dogs.  I have not cat tested her yet.  I’ll update this post as I know more.

Today her trip to the vet was perfect.  She was happy, calm, never the least bit stressed.  Heart and lungs were normal.  She is now current on her Rabies and tested negative for heart worms.  I’m taking a fecal in tomorrow for a full worm test and she gets her first Heartguard pill today.  She has some ear issues we are treating.  As far as her eyes, we did a tear test to rule out dry eyes.  Her eyes tested normal on the tear test.  We also checked for Entropion (eye lashes turned in) and her eye lashes are also normal.   My gut says she has either a food or environmental allergies, very typical of white/cream Std Poodles.  Her teeth need cleaning.  I will have this done myself or her future home can have it done by their own vet, if I have not had this done prior to adoption.  I don’t want to over stress her, so one thing at a time.  Right now my focus is her eyes and ears, once we get a clear plan of attack on those two fronts, we will move to the teeth.

Sasha is a gem.  She is one of those dogs who could go home with just about anyone.  She has one big Achilles heel.  She is a horrible counter surfer / food hound.  She is a little under weight and maybe this will decrease as I get her changed over to a high quality kibble.  A home willing to do a raw diet would be FABULOUS, but not a deal breaker if you aren’t comfortable with the concept.  I think this dog would thrive on raw, but I am not going to change her over unless I know someone will continue with the program.  For now I have changed her to Taste of the Wild.

I can confirm she knows Sit and Down.  She also will ‘go to bed’.  Last night she slept loose in my bedroom and she promptly claimed one of the two beds in the room.  Jazz was kicked to the carpet!  She loves snoozing on the couch, so I think only those homes OK with dogs on the furniture need apply.  She is of the extreme opinion that she is a house dog only.  She will bump and bark at the back door to make this point fully clear to anyone located inside the house.  This is a good thing, especially if it turns out her allergies are related to the great outdoors.

Today’s vet bill was 250 for all the procedures and medications (tear test, heartworm test, heartworm medication for a year, shot, fecal, exam, ear medication, eye medication).  If I have her teeth cleaned, the cost of adoption will go up to include that price.  If the family adopting her will take care of her teeth, I will place her for $300.00 to cover the cost of gas used yesterday during my 7 hour drive.  I am not looking to make any money on the placement of this dog.  Only to break even so I can continue to provide this service to dogs in need.

If you would like me to consider your home for this lovely girl, please request an adoption application above!
