We have a new addition to our crew, and she comes in the form of one spunky brown clown! Diane is one of my seasoned foster moms. She owns Zelda, the grandmother of our current litter of pups in Kansas out of her daughter Libby. Diane’s other Standard Poodle passed away last spring and his passing left a huge hole in their life. Zelda is almost 11 years old, yet she still spry enough to help raise a baby puppy. The time was right for their home to add in a new puppy.
We went back and forth about litters for a while. Some life events put finding a new puppy for Diane on hold, then things settled down a bit, so Diane decided to move forward with a new foster. She contacted me several months ago, right when my good friend Gina at SunVal had a huge litter due to be born any day. The fact that they were all brown made the temptation even greater. I really wanted to add in a brown girl this time to round out my future plans. While both Newt and Jingle are carriers, having a brown girl will give me more options for diversifying my program.
So let me introduce you to Duchess! She is officially SunVal’s Dodge City Duchess and she is absolutely a pistol! Her mother hunts and has extreme retrieving drive, which is not lost on this girl. Duchess is already a go getter, yet attentive and eager to learn. I see a lot of impulse control training in their future! Gina also practices Puppy Culture training with her babies, so Duchess doesn’t know the word fear. Diane has her work cut out for her, but I think these two will enjoy every minute of this new adventure.
I was able to visit Duchess over Thanksgiving and get a few photos and evaluate her temperament and structure. Generally the new pups come to me first, then I place them with foster families, but it just so happened that Gina had another puppy going to a different home in the exact same city as Diane, so it made since for the two girls to travel together. I knew I would be up in northwest Arkansas over the holidays anyway, so it worked out well.
Diane hopes to show in rally, obedience, lure coursing, and maybe agility. She plans to take this little lady to the Poodle Club of America specialty show next spring! I am excited about their future and cannot wait to see how she matures.
